Students in the Showcase responsible for some of the movies detailed below

AFI Fest Film Festival featured a spotlight with filmmaker Ava DuVernay and conversations with actors such as Robert Downey Jr. and Sarah Polley, but it’s the student films that are spotlighted in this film festival that focuses on new discoveries.

Steven Spielberg debuted “The Fabelmans,” Guillermo del Toro brought out his “Pinocchio,” and actress Patricia Clarkson talked about her involvement in the movie “She Said” about the #MeToo movement.

The AFI festival spotlights the year-long project that many of the master’s degree newby filmmakers are creating in their class. I saw about two dozen of the new films, and will highlight some of the most amazing.

This cute comedy shows a young chubby girl who is obsessed with kung-fu who gets teased by other kids in the country club. She gets to hang out there because her father works as a waiter at the club, but she can’t fit in no matter how hard she tries.

She discovers that the female golf pro legend whose plaque is on the country club wall is now transitioning…
