It still gives me the creeps that this cute brown-eyed guy who was so eager to help out with AIDS causes was the guy who previously strangled another friend of mine whose head and feet were found in a dumpster.

It was kind of an open secret that while I was a mainstream journalist in Los Angeles, I was moonlighting as a reviewer for porn. I was renting a room in a friend of mine’s house, Sabin, and he edited some adult magazines. I said the reviews were terrible. Because I wrote mainstream movie reviews, and even taught students how to write them at a UCLA Extension class, he suggested that I write some porn reviews and it would pay off some of my rent.

That’s how Mickey Skee was born. And, when Adult Video News, the Variety of Porn, asked me to be the Gay & Bi editor because readers liked and respected my reviews, I became the Rex Reed of Porn and later wrote gossip columns and sort of became the Hedda Hopper of Porn. I helped produce fundraisers for AIDS charities that made more than half a million dollars for AIDS foundations (the ones that weren’t shy about taking money donated from the adult industry). I also wrote 13 books on the adult industry.
