Try the Fried Avocado at the LA County Fair
By Mike Szymanski
A competition of bunnies who don’t look like bunnies. A baby goat that seeks attention by standing on its mama’s back. A maze of candy, robotics made by kids, and fried everything. It’s all at the LA County Fair, and with this column I’ll try to give you some of the best tips.
Fried pickles, deep-fried Twinkies, fried everything. That’s what I first thought about when we planned our trip to the LA County Fair.
Crusty fried junk smothering a tasty soft interior. That’s what it’s always meant for me when going to any county fair, especially the LA County Fair that’s held in a part of Los Angeles County that most people don’t think is even in LA — Pomona.
This year, my youngest nephew Donovan is playing at the fair just before he graduates from Cal Poly Pomona in engineering. He is playing bass, which he taught himself with YouTube on his off time while doing an engineering internship in Texas. He plays with the Raccoon Cartoons, a sweet band started by his roommate Nick, and they’ve recorded some of their tender melodic lyrics and posted them online. Now, they’re playing the County Fair.
